Our History
The Yankalilla, Rapid Bay & Myponga Agricultural & Horticultural Society was officially formed on 31 July 1882 at the Yankalilla District Council Chambers.
The first show was held that November near the Yankalilla Hotel. In 1883, the event moved to Jetty Road, Normanville, beside the now-demolished Royal Hotel.
Establishing Our Grounds
In March 1887, the Society purchased four acres for £30 per acre. With help from the community—donated materials and labour—a stone hall was built, funded by the Ladies Committee. The first show on the new grounds took place in July 1887.
By 1900, two more acres were added and a supper room was built. Further upgrades came in the early 1950s, including a foyer, gallery, cloakroom, and a cinema projection room.

More Than a Showground
The Society has long supported local sport and community life. In earlier years, a cricket pitch was laid in the show ring (removed in 1978), and the grounds were leased to the Yankalilla Football Club as early as 1909. While major sports moved to Yankalilla Memorial Park in 1926, the showgrounds have historically hosted a wide range of activities—including hockey matches, gymkhanas, dog shows, visiting circuses, and social gatherings. The Show Society has also enjoyed a relationship spanning over 50 years with the Fleurieu Equestrian Club, regularly hosting their rallies and events on the grounds.
Over the decades, the halls have been the setting for dances, balls, and cabarets, continuing to serve the community in many ways.
Continuous Improvement
We are proud to maintain our grounds without debt. In 2014, we built a new trade shed, renovated the toilets with accessible facilities, repainted the supper room, and repaired the old poultry sheds (now “The Eatery”).
COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 show, but also brought opportunity. Thanks to the efforts of Caroline Cleland and Ian Main, we received funding through the Regional Agricultural Show Development Grant. This supported upgrades to the kitchen, a new pony club storage shed, hall repairs, and a new pavilion bathroom—completed in 2021.
Next up: replacing the main hall roof. There's always work to do, but we’re committed to preserving and improving this special place for generations to come.
